Training

A Clinical training track designed for MDs provides excellent clinical training at the University affiliated county hospital and COH Medical Center. The ACGME requires that training in this track includes involvement in research; however the scope of the involvement is commonly more clinical in nature and is limited to two years. Clinical exposure to all endocrine disciplines, including gynecologic reproductive, adolescent and pediatric endocrinology, is provided. General Endocrine, Diabetes, Thyroid Fine Needle Aspiration and Pituitary Clinics are held regularly. Clinical endocrine conferences including multidisciplinary conferences, basic science seminars and research conferences are scheduled weekly. The City of Hope National Medical Center, a highly acclaimed specialty hospital was added as a participating training site in 2003

The Divisions of Endocrinology in the Departments of Medicine and Pediatrics at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center also offer a three year research track (Academic Track) which provides training for MDs  seeking to develop essential investigative skills in both basic and clinical research to allow for future development of an independent academic career. In addition, a 2-3 year research training program for PhDs (Research track) who intend to pursue a research career in academics or industry is also offered. The Divisions have jointly held an NIH training grant for post-doctoral fellows continuously for over 30 years.  Many of the graduates of our training program have gone on to develop gratifying, successful careers as independent investigators around the globe. M.D trainees in this track are provided ample clinical experience to be highly competent clinical endocrinologists.
