Research Curriculum

Scholarship is an integral and active component of Infectious Diseases Fellowship at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center. The campus has a rich history of faculty involvement in research and our fellows are invited to participate in clinical outcomes, epidemiologic, translational, or basic research in infection and immunity.

Fellows spend ~20% of their time on research blocks.  The goal for all fellows is to accomplish a research project, ideally with a publication in a peer-reviewed journal and to submission to an abstract for presentation of their work. Funding support is provided to the fellow to offset costs for publication and meeting fees.

All fellows are assigned a research mentor in the first months of their fellowship. A research curriculum is provided to help navigate IRB documentation, setting achievable goals, and ensuring fellows are receiving optimal support. Mentors assist with fellows to identify a significant and relevant infectious disease problem, support literature review, formulation of feasible and testable hypotheses, navigate IRB procedures, and provide ongoing feedback during data collection, data analysis and manuscript writing.

As a traditional endpoint of the Fellowship program, graduating fellows present a lecture at the Infectious Diseases Grand Rounds conference related to their research of interest.
