Resident Life

Overview

Living in the South Bay & Los Angeles

The South Bay in Los Angeles is one of the most unique and diverse cities in the country, made up of numerous neighborhoods that each offer their own style, activities, and way of life. Living here means there is never a paucity of things to do. From the restaurant aficionado, to the museum and concert goer, to the true outdoor adventurer and beyond, there is something for everyone to enjoy outside of residency.

Harbor Traditions

The Department of Medicine hosts an annual fall housestaff retreat in locations outside of the South Bay and Los Angeles (past venues include Lake Arrowhead, Huntington Beach, Ventura, and Santa Barbara). The retreat provides an opportunity for the housestaff to further build camaraderie with a focus on a theme unique to each retreat, and is definitely a continued favorite early in the year.

Additional traditions at Harbor include the annual department holiday party as well as frequent resident organized events at the conclusion of each rotation.

Where To Live?

Many of our residents live in the South Bay, including the Beach cities (Torrance, Redondo Beach, Hermosa Beach, and Manhattan Beach), Palos Verdes, and San Pedro. Others venture slightly further, to Long Beach, Orange County, Downtown Los Angeles, or the Westside of Los Angeles (Culver City/Venice/Santa Monica). Despite the distance, all of these spots offer a reasonable (early morning) commute.

Department of Medicine Scavenger Hunt

The DOM Scavenger Hunt traditionally has included iconic locations in Los Angeles and Orange County areas. Resident and faculty are encouraged to partake in unique Southern California activities and gain points. At the end of the year there is a resident and faculty winner!
