I hope everyone had a relaxing long-weekend of football watching and turkey (or Tofu-rky) eating. Just a couple important things to remember about turkeys:

The appendage over a turkey’s beak is called a snood. Female turkey’s prefer long-snooded males, and this behavior may be due to the fact that longer snooded males tend to carry a lower parasitic burden and are overall healthier (from an evolutionary standpoint).

A turkey’s gender (and many other birds) can be determined by the shape of its “droppings”. A male’s will be “J” shaped and a female’s will be spiral.

Also, please be aware of a couple of interesting talks through LA Biomed at the beginning of December.

The first one is by Dr. Henry Sucov a professor at USC who works on the developmental biology of heart development (among many other things). He has been involved with ground-breaking research into the molecular mechanisms behind congenital heart disease and will be discussing some of his work.
