Nephrology Fellowship at Harbor-UCLA

  • Harbor-UCLA Nephrology fellowship program offers the excitement, intellectual stimulation, autonomy, and rewards of providing medical care in one of the largest teaching medical centers in Southern California and one of very few Trauma Level 1 centers in the state of California, the most populous state of the nation.  Another salient uniqueness of Harbor-UCLA Nephrology program is the plan to offer training and certification in dialysis medical directorship in partnership with dialysis organizations and the National Forum of ESRD Networks (see below curriculum sample schedule).
  • Our program offers the guidance and didactic teaching expected in an academic university setting, provided by clinically astute, caring, and academically cutting-edge faculty.
  • Our kidney transplant program is the hub of Los Angeles County Department of Health services and highly integrated in educational activities.
  • Harbor-UCLA Nephrology fellowship program is designed to meet the individual goals of trainees to emerge as world class nephrologists.
  • Fellowship may be planned for two years (traditional track) or three or more years, with flexibility regarding the amount of time spent on the clinical service and on research or additional areas of expertise.
  • Time spent doing clinical or basic research varies with the degree of the trainee’s interest. Thus we offer a program which allows for maximal latitude in meeting the career goals of the individual trainee.
  • Our program consists of several highly integrated disciplines including: 1) General nephrology including inpatient consult; 2) Critical care (ICU) nephrology including CRRT; 3) Ambulatory nephrology including glomerulonephritis, diabetic and hypertensive nephropathy, and nutritional management of kidney disease; 4) Outpatient dialysis including incremental dialysis transition and home dialysis training, as well as training in dialysis medical directorship, value based models, and business of nephrology; 5) Kidney transplantation including living donor; 6) Interventional nephrology including dialysis vascular access and kidney biopsy; and 7) Research including clinical and translational research, epidemiology, and basic science investigations.
  • The Nephrology fellowship training program at Harbor-UCLA under the new leadership of Dr Kam Kalantar and Dr Anuja Shah since 2023 along with world class nephrologists experts including Drs Sharon Adler and Joel Kopple as well as RRichard Glassock, former Nephrology chiefs of Harbor-UCLA, and other distinguished faculty with unique areas of expertise (see faculty list), is designed to prepare postdoctoral fellows for academic and/or clinical careers in the discipline of nephrology, hypertension and kidney transplantation, as well as dialysis medical directorship and physician leadership.
  • Our nephrology training program is one of very few ones in California and in the nation that has created integrated kidney teams of renal fellows and advanced practice providers (APPs including NPs and PAs) working together, consistent with the contemporary and future trends in Nephrology practice.
  • We teach innovations in practice and business of Nephrology including value-based kidney care models.
  • Over the years we have trained an elite group of nephrologists, and presently offer a traditional two year nephrology training program as well as a combined clinical/research fellowship that is three (or more) years in duration.
  • We are conveniently located within 15-20 min from the Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) with nonstop flights to virtually any place in the nation and worldwide.
  • We work and train in the most desired region among the nation’s most beautiful and attractive places of Los Angeles County and LA South Bay including Redondo Beach (popular pier and gastronomy dream), Palos Verdes Peninsula (world famous Portuguese Bend hiking with breathtaking Pacific Ocean view), Torrance Beach, Manhattan Beach, Hermosa Beach, Long Beach (20 min from Long Beach Airport and Long Beach Aquarium), among others, all located within minutes of driving from Harbor-UCLA.
  • Our faculty and fellows have published thousands of high-impact articles that have changed the field of kidney care and kidney health, and person-centeredness.
  • We are the main hub of nephrology and kidney transplantation for the Los Angeles County Department of Health Services, nation’s 2nd largest municipal health system. The pages herein will provide greater detail about our program
