MS4 – ELECTIVES

There are 3 distinct 4th year electives offered, with each rotation lasting for 3 weeks. These can be arranged and scheduled through the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA Student Affairs Office. These sub-internships serve as an immersive experience where students can participate on a greater level, and function alongside interns. As a sub-intern, students can expect to be independently responsible for patients, while under the guidance of faculty and more senior residents. This provides an excellent opportunity to further enhance medical knowledge as well as prepare for a possible residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology. You can read more about these opportunities below, as use the provided link to submit your application.

HIGH RISK OBSTETRICS

Course Director: Dr. Megan Economidis

This rotation provides both an ambulatory and in-patient component in the care of patients with high risk pregnancies. Students participate in High Risk Clinic, Labor & Delivery, In-patient rounds, and can shadow one of our MFMs during their weekly ultrasound sessions. Moreover, this sub-internship allows for the opportunity to participate in care for some of the sickest pregnant patients who require hospitalization. As a sub-internship, this well-rounded experience offers the opportunity to explore Maternal Fetal Medicine in a high-risk population with extensive and rare pathologies.

Didactic sessions with the Obstetrics/MFM service are provided but are independently assigned by the Faculty and residents throughout the course of the rotation.

GYNECOLOGIC SURGERY

Course Director: Dr. Christina Truong

For the surgically inclined, this sub-internship is an opportunity to devote 3 weeks to the greater understanding of the diagnosis and treatment of gynecologic malignancies, advanced pre-invasive disease, and benign surgeries. Students will split their time with both the Gyn Oncology service as well as Benign Gyn service. Students will scrub into surgical cases involving the treatment of ovarian, endometrial, cervical, vaginal and primary peritoneal cancers. These surgeries often involve the use laparoscopy as well as the Da Vinci Robot. While on the Benign Gyn service, students will scrub on both open and minimally invasive cases often with complex benign pathology.  When not in the OR, students will attend both Benign and Oncology Gyn Clinics.

Students will attend didactic sessions with the residents and will be expected to give a 10-15 minute presentation at the end of their rotation.

AMBULATORY WOMEN’S HEALTH

Course Director: Dr. Samantha P. Nadella

This sub-internship is an ambulatory experience in the direct outpatient care of women and their unique health needs. Students should expect exposure to the Gynecologic Urgent Care as well as other Gynecological Specialty Clinics such as Advanced Family Planning, Reproductive Endocrinology, Female Pelvic Medicine & Reconstructive Surgery (FPMRS), Abnormal Cytology and many others. Typically, given the non-overlapping nature of the clinic schedule, students can participate in the majority of these different clinics and learn from many of the subspecialists that staff these diverse gynecologic clinics.  Many of these clinics are also heavily procedure based (endometrial biopsies, LARC placement/removal, Colposcopy, vulvar mass excisions, D&Cs, D&Es, etc) and student involvement is highly encouraged.

Students will attend didactic sessions with the residents as well as an FPMRS weekly lecture and Abnormal Cytology chart review. Educational material is provided at the beginning of the rotation and is individually tailored to the goals of the student.  Students will also be given the opportunity to have a day in the Main OR and take weekend inpatient call.  Students will also be expected to give a 10-15 minute presentation at the end of their rotation.
