Your Residency Training in Obstetrics and Gynecology will be a phenomenal period of growth in your life, both personal and professional. In only four years, your education and clinical acumen will grow exponentially, your technical skills and confidence will be realized. Harbor-UCLA, exposes you to the full breadth of the specialty, and this intensive clinical and surgical experience will have a significant impact on how you will practice medicine for the rest of your career. Therefore, as you are looking for a residency position, finding the right program that meets these goals, as well as one that matches your personality, will ultimately enable you to become the best physician that you can be.

Training begins with the trainers: Our faculty members at Harbor–UCLA include graduates from all four of the sub-specialties in OB/GYN. The affiliated faculty members at our participating off site rotations provide surgical and obstetrical expertise. We all believe that for each and every resident to become an outstanding physician, the concept of progressive autonomy is crucial to your success. With increasing knowledge and abilities, comes greater responsibility, allowing for a more independent approach and management of your patients. Our patient population comprises the full range of medical conditions, from the healthy to the highly complex that few programs can match. Because of these experiences, at the completion of our program, you will be confident with both your medical knowledge and surgical capabilities.

The field of OB/GYN is an unequaled opportunity to care for people during the most important and memorable moments of their lives. Whether these moments are filled with the joy of a pregnancy or tragedy of a cancer diagnosis, their OB/GYN will likely be the person whom our patients will turn to first. During your training, there will be successes as well as setbacks, which is common in any notable endeavor. However, throughout your journey of residency at Harbor-UCLA, you will know that you will not be facing these challenges alone. You will be an integral part of our “residency family,” as the faculty and your fellow residents work together to provide unparalleled patient care and educational experiences.

What do we consider when reviewing candidates? What makes a candidate a great fit for Harbor-UCLA Ob/Gyn?

We recognize the systemic bias that exist within the system of GME, as well as the fact that implicit bias exists within all of us and must be deliberately identified and rooted out. Our program and department have taken several measures to address these issues, and those measures extend to our consideration of every applicant to our program.

We reeducate our reviewers yearly regarding our holistic approach to application reviews. In the past, often an applicant’s metrics were the defining attributes of their application – test scores, grades, publications, MSPE, etc. That is no longer the case! We recognize that an applicant is MORE than these metrics. When reviewing an application, we now place considerable weight on things like the applicant’s lived experiences, their communities, intersectionality, character traits, educational path, and commitment to our patient population – these things are at the forefront of our consideration of every applicant.

  • Are you DEDICATED to serving underserved patient populations, as demonstrated by your professional activities to date?
  • Are you COMMITTED to advocacy for our patients and our specialty?
  • Are you MOTIVATED to do all you can in caring for your patients, even when resources may be limited?
  • Do you strive to be a LIFE-LONG LEARNER, always seeking ways to improve personally, communally, and within your profession?

If all of this is true for you – you will find yourself at “home” in training with us at Harbor-UCLA Ob/Gyn!
