While the resident years are of necessity focused on clinical care, a number of residents choose to participate in research activities.
Such activities are encouraged by the department and supported in a number of ways. PL-2’s and PL-3’s can take a one-month Research elective, mentored by a faculty member. The department supports attendance at national meetings for residents who are presenting their work.
Residents may compete for research awards, including the annual Joseph W St. Geme, Jr. Pediatric Resident Research Award, which carries a $1000 stipend, and the David Imagawa Memorial Fellowship Travel Award, for which residents and fellows are eligible. Many faculty have served as research mentors to residents; assisting with design and implementation of research ideas.
