Surgical Critical Care

The mission of the LA County-Harbor-UCLA Fellowship Program in Surgical Critical Care is to provide unparalleled training in a robust academic setting, conduct ongoing investigations leading to wide benefit to all critically ill and prepare clinician teachers to practice independently and undertake administrative roles in local, regional and national professional organizations. We provide an environment where a trainee can begin to achieve full potential for clinical proficiency, technical capability, academic output and role modeling.

Our vision is to nurture a cadre of physician leaders who are prepared to provide uncompromising care and who are dedicated to advancement of Surgical Critical Care.

The HUCLA Fellowship in Surgical Critical Care is a one year ACGME accredited training program administered by the Division of Trauma/ Acute Care Surgery/ Surgical Critical Care. Dr. David Plurad is the program director and has overall responsibility for clinical experience, academic curriculum, trainee evaluation and advancement and final (summative) evaluation. In addition to Dr. Plurad, there are nine core faculty providing teaching and mentorship. There are required rotations with the Harbor-UCLA adult Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU), the Harbor-UCLA Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Unit (CTICU), the Los Angeles County- University of Southern California (LAC + USC) Burn Center and the Children’s Hospital of Orange County (CHOC) Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU). There are also rotations dedicated to research and an elective rotation (one month each). The program will provide the framework for proficiency in the six ACGME core competencies as they relate to SCC.

Training evolutions include, but are not limited to,

  • clinical experience in varied high volume academic environments,
  • a structured didactic schedule,
  • computer based educational programs,
  • self-directed reviews,
  • involvement in divisional and hospital-wide quality improvement programs, participation in a formal research program,
  • board review preparations courses with standardized review testing,
  • teaching assignments and a skills/simulation curriculum.
