Applications/FAQs

What is the deadline for applications?

September 27, 2023.

How should I send my application to you?

Our program will be participating in the 2024 ERASĀ® cycle. MyERAS applications may be completed between September 6 – September 27, 2023.

How do I know you have received my complete application?

Your application status can be checked through ERAS.

How many letters of recommendations do I need to submit?

Minimum of three.

How many positions are offered for the upcoming application cycle?

Two.

Do you have board score cutoffs or restrictions?

No.

Do I need to have a Step 2 score?

Completing the USMLE Step 2 exam is recommended but not required in order to apply.

Do you accept applications from foreign medical graduates?

Yes.

Do you accept applications from international applicants?

Yes.

Do you accept applications if I have completed or had training in another residency program?

Yes.

Do you offer PGY1 positions?

No. Our program is considered ā€œAdvancedā€ which means that we do not offer a PGY1 position. You must complete your PGY1 training before starting your dermatology residency. If you are interested in training for your preliminary year at Harbor-UCLA, you need to apply to the preliminary program in ERAS. In addition, contact the program via email to inform them that you are a dermatology prelim applicant at InternalMedicine@dhs.lacounty.gov

Not ranking the prelim year does not influence your chances of matching in the dermatology program.

What are your Interview Dates?

Harbor Dermatology will review applications via ERAS and send out an email invitation. Interviews will be conducted on January 8, 2024, and January 22, 2024. In line with our strong commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion and access, all interviews will be virtual. There is also an optional virtual social event the evening before interviews for applicants to meet the current residents in a casual setting in lieu of our previous years’ bowling nights or seaside sunset dinners.

During the 2023-2024 Interview Season we will not be offering second looks, but applicants will have the opportunity to visit virtual didactic and resident sessions to get to know us better.

Do you participate in the NRMP?

Yes.

How can I rotate or do an elective at your program?

Harbor-UCLA Dermatology fourth year medical student clerkship opportunities are available in three week blocks (may request additional week, if applicable) under course ME-ME215.08 ā€“ General Dermatology. Please see https://ucla.oasisscheduling.com/public/view_course.html?yid=2018;did=ME;cid=ME215.08 to apply.

We are currently offering clerkships to visiting medical students through VSLO. We follow the general guide consistent with the dermatology program directors’ consensus opinion that students interested in dermatology participate in no more than one “away” rotation. For students without a dermatology program this is not as strict.

If you are a resident with an interest to rotate in our division, your institution must have an agreement with Harbor-UCLA Medical Center for insurance purposes. Once an agreement is in place, you will need to submit a letter from your Residency Program Director, the UCLA HIPAA Compliance Certificate, and a copy of your medical license.

Will you hold any virtual meet and greet sessions?Ā

Our NRMP selection committee has decided to skip Meet & Greets in order to decrease the pressure on medical students to attend these types of sessions and to preserve holistic review. Ā For additional information about our program please see https://www.harbor-ucla.org/.Ā  If you have any further questions, our Program Coordinator, Ms. Paige Kobayashi is available to try and address them.
