Emergency Ultrasound Fellowship

Overview

The Ultrasound Fellowship at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center is well established and has been training fellows since 2002.

Harbor-UCLA Medical Center is a suburban county hospital with an outstanding patient population demonstrating a wide variety of pathologic states. We have a brand new Emergency Department and with that have a total of 12 brand-new and full-featured ultrasound machines. We have Q-path for reviewing images as well as the ability to upload our bedside ultrasounds into our hospital-wide PACS system. We are a trusted provider of ultrasound examinations for the hospital. Our ultrasounds are relied upon by a variety of services for patient care decisions. Bedside exams performed include (but are not limited to) cardiac, IUP, biliary, aortic, DVT, renal, vascular, soft tissue, pulmonary, procedure-based (e.g., lumbar punctures, nerve blocks, venous access, peritonsillar abscess drainage, etc.). We also acquired a SonoMan sonography simulator for high-fidelity simulation cases.

The curriculum follows the ultrasound fellowship guidelines developed by the Ultrasound Section of the American College of Emergency Physicians. During the fellowship year, fellows are expected to perform a minimum of 800 exams, pursue directed reading, and experience the many aspects of ultrasound teaching and administration. A scholarly project is required during the fellowship. This project can be tailored toward an interest in ultrasound administration (ultrasound director at a private ED) or academic ultrasound. The ultrasound fellow has a wide variety of teaching opportunities involving trainees from the medical student to faculty level.
