Continuing Medical Education and Other Trainings

General CME Requirement of the California Medical Board

The Medical Board of California requires license holders to complete 25 hours of category 1 Continuing Medical Education. Residents and fellows are allowed six hours of Category 1 credit for each month of residency or fellowship, with a maximum of 72 hours each year. If the Medical Board ever audits you, you would simply need to provide proof of your time in residency training. Click Here to read the Medical Board’s explanation.

If for some reason you would like to have a certificate for the CMEs you completed during ACGME accredited residency training, the AMA does provide this service. The certificates are free for AMA members. Please see the section on Resident Application for PRA and Direct Credit on the AMA’s website for more information and an application.

One-Time CME Requirement for All License Holders Including Trainees

The California Medical Board requires all license holders, including trainees, to complete 12 category 1 CME hours on Pain Management and the Appropriate Care and Treatment of the Terminally Ill. Pathologists and Radiologist are exempt from this requirement. Physicians with an active license before January 1, 2002, will have until December 31, 2006, to obtain the 12 hours. Physicians licensed on or after January 1, 2002, must complete the mandated hours by their second license renewal date or within four years whichever comes first. Please read more about this requirement on the Medical Board’s website.
