Welcome to the Department of Internal Medicine
The Department of Internal Medicine has more than 8000 admissions to the inpatient services per year and over 80,000 outpatient visits annually. The Internal Medicine Department is responsible for approximately 150 inpatient beds in Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, including a recently remodeled 8-bed Medical-Respiratory ICU, a 6-bed Coronary Care Unit, 40 Progressive Care Unit beds, a 6 bed Renal Transplant Unit, and an Infusion Clinic.
Ambulatory care is provided in a full range of general internal medicine and subspecialty clinics housed in the Primary Care Center and other ambulatory clinic areas. There are approximately 30 clinics focused on internal medicine subspecialty care.
Our faculty, fellows, researchers, and residents are committed to the Harbor-UCLA traditions of providing comprehensive and compassionate care to our patients, conducting cutting-edge basic science and clinical research, and promoting excellence in clinical education through our residency and fellowship programs.
Harbor-UCLA Medical Center is one of the nation’s finest settings for post-graduate residency training in Internal Medicine. It has a rich history of producing leaders in all fields of medicine and this tradition is embraced and carried forth by our dedicated housestaff today.
The Department of Medicine at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center is the largest academic department on campus and has been affiliated continuously with the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA since 1951. We have over 70 full-time faculty members with their academic home at the David Geffen School of Medicine and over 100 voluntary faculty from the local community who teach in our clinics and inpatient settings. Our faculty, fellows, researchers, and residents are committed to the Harbor-UCLA traditions of providing comprehensive and compassionate care to our patients, conducting cutting-edge basic science and clinical research, and promoting excellence in clinical education through our residency and fellowship programs.
Harbor-UCLA Medical Center services the medically under-served patients of the surrounding Los Angeles community as well as a large, growing cohort of medically insured, empanelled patients. The Department of Internal Medicine’s goals are to provide high-quality care to all our patients and serve as a medical home for those who need it most. Our patients are the heart of our mission and the strength of our training programs.
Harbor-UCLA is also home to LA Biomed, one of the largest biomedical institutes on the West Coast, where the faculty conduct a full range of research endeavors, from standard bench research, to translational and industry clinical trials, to health services research.
The Department of Medicine offers Electronic Health Record (EHR) training to students, interns, residents, fellows, and faculty that are going to be rotating or beginning practice within the Department of Medicine.
