The Division of Neurology at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center focuses on outstanding patient-centered care. In our busy pediatric neurology clinic children from newborn through young adults, present with a range of neurologic conditions- cerebral palsy, developmental delay, epilepsy, headache and autoimmune conditions. We are proud to serve children and their families from all parts of Los Angeles County, including large communities of underserved populations.

The Division of Pediatric Neurology also maintains a thriving consult service. Regularly drawing consults from the emergency department, pediatric ward, neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) and pediatric intensive care unit (PICU), nursery, and the pediatric outpatient clinic. Our child neurologists work closely with neonatologists and maternal fetal medicine colleagues and assist in prenatal consults when a fetus is given a diagnosis of serious neurologic conditions, for example, various brain malformations.

Resident education is a top priority of the division. Pediatric residents are an important part of our clinic and consult team and are exposed to routine neurologic diagnoses as well as complex syndromes. Attendings round daily and engage in bedside learning. The faculty have full-time appointments in the Department of Pediatrics, UCLA School of Medicine and contribute to pediatric house staff didactics, and medical students lectures. Also, faculty regularly lead pediatric case conferences and grand rounds. The division participates heavily in are adult neurology conferences and resident learning sessions which are open to all residents rotating through child neurology.

Our team includes two full time child neurologists and nurse practitioner. A social worker is also available to work closely with our clinic patients when needed. At any given time our consult team may have residents from pediatrics, adult neurology and medical students working together.

We work together toward our mutual goals-excellent patient care, strong resident teaching and research.

Current active studies include intrathecal enzyme replacement for mucopolysaccharidosis type I and metachromatic leukodystrophy, intrathecal cyclodextrin for Niemann Pick Type C disease, and anti-inflammatory therapy for mucopolysaccharidosis type III. Dr. Chen is equally committed to maintaining an active clinical service in general child neurology serving DHS patients in the greater Los Angeles region.
