Clinical Highlights

It is an exciting time in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Harbor-UCLA!  We recently celebrated the opening of a hospital addition comprised of a new Emergency Room and Operating Room Suite with 16 ultramodern operating rooms.  Our robust Minimally Invasive Surgical Program includes an on-site Simulation Center and the recent procurement of two surgical robots, including the very first Xi da Vinci robot to be installed in the Western United States.  Utilization of robotic surgery has transformed care for our patients, especially those with reproductive cancers.  Another first came in the area of electronic medical record (EMR) implementation. Harbor-UCLA Medical Center was the first Los Angeles County Department of Health Services (DHS) hospital to “go live” with the EMR system. Soon the entire DHS, the second largest municipal health system in the nation, will have the EMR fully implemented allowing its 19 health centers, four hospitals, and network of community partner clinics to have unified medical records for all women seeking care.

Ambulatory Care Services are also thriving.  Our newly renovated Obstetrics and Gynecology Clinic is home to Strong Start, a Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) funded initiative aimed at reducing preterm births.  We are the only Strong Start awardee in Los Angeles County and the only site in California implementing a Maternity Centered Medical Home innovation to improve pregnancy and birth outcomes.  This collaborative approach is based on our core philosophy that improved birth outcomes can be achieved by coordinating and providing access to the medical, behavioral, and social determinants of care.  Expanding beyond our pregnancy population, our Women’s Centered Medical Home is nearly complete and will realize our goal of comprehensive and integrated women’s care by a fully invested care team.  At the core of our obstetrical care is our Maternal Fetal Medicine team who expertly manage some of the highest acuity and medically complex women in Los Angeles County.  In addition, our Pelvic Floor Center and Urogynecology services continue to provide the widest breadth of services for pelvic floor disorders across Los Angeles County DHS, restoring function and quality of life to hundreds of women who previously felt destined to live with these highly treatable conditions.

Our program remains steadfast in its commitment to educate and train compassionate OB/GYNs. Our graduates universally credit their training at Harbor-UCLA and its affiliated programs with confidently preparing them to succeed in life beyond residency and fellowship. We are so proud that many of our graduates hold leadership and academic positions across the country and continue to participate in the training of residents and fellows.  Our talented clinical faculty balance autonomy with support to allow maximum breadth of learning across the spectrum of obstetric and gynecologic conditions, many of which encompass complex medical and psychosocial conditions.  We invite you to learn more about the “Harbor Mystique” – the singular dedication and loyalty to live the hospital’s mission to deliver the highest quality of care to those in greatest need.
