Harbor-UCLA PSYCHIATRY

ABOUT US

Harbor-UCLA Medical Center is a major public teaching hospital jointly administered by LA County Health Agency and the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA.  It is one of three county hospitals with a full range of mental health services in a county with over 10 million people. We treat a predominantly lower income, ethnically, racially, and linguistically diverse population and provide service regardless of ability to pay. Community psychiatry is a central aspect of our training program.

Our hospital-based services include two inpatient psychiatric units with a total of 38 inpatient beds, an adult psychiatric emergency room, an adolescent psychiatric emergency room (one of very few in the country), and a very active consultation/liaison service. Our dedicated psychiatric emergency rooms see over 6,000 individuals each year for emergency assessment, diagnostic evaluation, stabilization, and referral to the next level of care.

On-site outpatient services include a general psychiatry adult outpatient clinic, a child and adolescent clinic, a dual diagnosis program for treatment of comorbid substance use and mental disorders, assertive community treatment teams (i.e., Full-Service Partnership), a behavioral medicine clinic which treats patients with co-occurring medical comorbidities such as HIV and cancer, and a wellness center which provides fitness and recreational activities and peer support groups for our patients.

Our clinics specialize in multiple therapeutic modalities, such as psychopharmacology, psychodynamic psychotherapy, supportive psychotherapy, cognitive behavior therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), and prolonged exposure (PE), among others. Additionally, we partner with other specialties to provide integrated care at on-campus clinics, e.g., OB/GYN, general internal medicine, HIV services and family medicine.

Our training program also offers off-site rotations and electives.
