Harbor-UCLA PSYCHIATRY

RESIDENT WELL-BEING

Our department is deeply committed to the personal development and well-being of our residents.  Whether you are working on the emergency, inpatient, or outpatient level, we utilize a multidisciplinary team-based approach to maximize support and minimize burnout.  We consider everyone who works or trains here a member of the “Harbor family.”

Our sense of community is reinforced by our shared campus.  As a resident, most of your clinical duties will take place at sites steps away from each other.  We work closely with one another, so daily check-ins and open-door policies are the norm. Typically, all psychiatry residents have lunch together at noon on a daily basis.  We also have a number of regular events that promote wellness including: an annual 3-day retreat for all residents, a weekly on-campus farmer’s market, bimonthly residency meetings, and several annual parties to celebrate the holidays, the incoming intern class, the end of the academic year, and graduation.  In addition, we have a weekly meditation and process group, typically attended by rotators on the emergency service, but open to all and accommodated by all on-service attendings.

Should you need additional support in residency, the GME employs a clinical psychologist that provides confidential therapy to residents and provides longer-term therapy referrals.  If this option does not meet your needs, therapy with a provider of your choice is fully covered by most available health insurance plans.
