Harbor-UCLA PSYCHIATRY

CALL SCHEDULE

All call responsibilities are performed from the Harbor Psychiatric Emergency Services Unit (PER).   Nurses, physicians, and caseworkers are centrally co-located in the PER.  Residents quickly become comfortable with their call duties through their two intern rotations in the PER and through direct supervision.  At all times, there is more than one psychiatric resident in-house and multiple fellows and faculty available by phone for clinical issues.

The majority of call duties relate to emergency evaluations.  It is rare to receive calls overnight for floor issues due to our experienced nursing staff, and there are no staffing requirements for overnight inpatient admissions.  There is no night float system at Harbor, and residents do not have pager responsibilities for inpatients or outpatients outside of weekday hours. Call trades are welcomed, easily accomplished, and frequently used.  Call responsibilities progressively decrease with seniority, with none required PGY-4 year.

PGY-1:

Interns take call on all rotations besides their 1-month of inpatient medicine, 1-month of inpatient neurology, and 1-month of emergency medicine.  On average, there is a monthly requirement of 2.5 weekday (Monday through Thursday) calls and 1.5 weekend (Friday through Sunday) calls.  Please note, these requirements are being reduced further as rotators from Charles R. Drew and UCLA are being added to the schedule.  Typically, residents see 2-3 patients per weekday call, while weekends are more variable.  If working overnight, the intern switches to a backup position around 2:15am, which usually allows for a substantial break from duties, but is dependent on the workload.
