Resident Life

Living in Southern California is amazing. Its counties of Los Angeles, Orange, San Diego, San Bernardino, and Riverside are in the top 15 most populous counties in the United States and all five are the top 5 most populous counties in California. This means you can find everything you want in terms of food, entertainment, and experience.  Harbor-UCLA is situated in an area of Los Angeles called The South Bay.  This area is one of the most culturally, economically, and ethnically diverse areas in the United States

Housing

There are a diversity of neighborhoods that residents can choose to live in including Redondo Beach, Torrance, San Pedro, Hermosa Beach and Manhattan Beach. Many residents live near Redondo Beach which is the closest of the Beach Cities to the hospital.  In Redondo Beach, there  are many affordable apartment options and many of these apartments are walking distance to the beach.

Lifestyle

The excellent year-round climate and proximity of the mountains and ocean combine to provide Los Angeles area with unique recreational facilities. The beaches are pleasant for swimming, playing volleyball, or taking a run along the coast. The nearest beach is less than 15 minutes from the hospital. Sailing also is available at nearby marinas. Skiing resorts are only 2-3 hours by car from the hospital and good snow is available about 4 months of the year.

For entertainment, the music center offers magnificent halls for ballet, drama, symphonies, and operas. The Greek theatre offers drama and ballet in an outdoor music theater. The Hollywood Bowl offers an opportunity to have a picnic under the stars while enjoying an outdoor arena of entertainment and the Disney Concert Hall enables one to listen to live classical music. For animal lovers, the Los Angeles zoo is less than 1 hour away and for sport lovers, the Dodger Stadium is a great place to watch a ball game. For art lovers, the Los Angeles County Museum is regarded as one of the best in the United States and the newly renovated Getty Museum holds the infamous “waterlilies” by Vincent Van Gogh. The Griffith observatory, which has been a landmark of Los Angeles since 1935, is a wonderful place to get some rest and relaxation amongst the stars since it has an impressive planetarium. There are more than 20 universities and colleges in the Los Angeles area providing educational, cultural, and social activities of wide variety and interest.

We have also started a new wellness program within the department. Led by residents, this program is designed to engender camaraderie and well-being among residents and faculty. The program continues to expand every year thanks to the creativity and motivation of everyone within the department.
