Clinical Neurophysiology Fellowship
Harbor-UCLA offers two one-year fellowship positions.
The program is ACGME accredited and has a long history of training neurologists who go on to either academic medicine or private practice.
The fellowship is focused on training in EEG and EMG/NCS but provides fellows with opportunities in many other realms of clinical neurophysiology, including interpretation of evoked potentials, and electives in sleep and intraoperative monitoring (IOM).
We feel our program is distinct in several ways:
- As a smaller program with dedicated full-time faculty, there is direct one-to-one observation, guidance, and feedback on a daily basis.
- In addition to standard neurophysiology clinics, fellows also attend botox clinic monthly addressing clinical conditions such as dystonia, spasticity and pain. Fellows may be able to do additional botox training if desired.
- There is a wide range of clinical cases. For example, given that the hospital is a level 1 trauma center, the fellows do a number of EMG/NCS on post-traumatic peripheral nerve injury. There is also exposure to pediatric studies throughout the year.
Finally, the South Bay is one of the most beautiful areas in Los Angeles and offers a range of great living opportunities (the fun, high energy beach living in Hermosa Beach, the more relaxed family setting of Redondo Beach, and more).
Schedule and Clinics:
There is an equal amount of time spent on interpreting EEGs and performing and interpreting EMG/NCS studies throughout the year.
Neuromuscular clinic: monthly
Botox clinic: monthly botox clinic supervised by specialists in the field
Myasthenia clinic: monthly
Epilepsy clinic: twice a month
Didactics:
Neurophysiology lectures are teleconferenced jointly with other neurophysiology programs at UCLA Westwood, the West Los Angeles VA, and Cedars-Sinai.
Waveform conference (fellows review NCS/EMG data of interesting cases with attending)
Journal club: lead by both fellows and attendings
Electives and other opportunities:
Sleep clinic and interpreting sleep studies (arranged with Harbor’s department of pulmonology)
Intraoperative monitoring elective at UCLA Ronald Reagan
Epilepsy Monitoring Unit at Rancho Los Amigos
Applicant Requirements:
Applicants must have completed an ACGME internship in medicine and residency in neurology, and be eligible for a California medical license.
We are able to consider applicants with J1 Visas who meet this requirement
