Wellness

Wellness comes in all forms. Sometimes wellness comes in the form of extra funds in one’s pocket so that it is that much easier for a resident to attend an out of state conference. Sometimes wellness is having a snack readily available when it’s 1 am and you are in the middle of a busy call shift. Sometimes wellness is having someone you can talk to so that you can just vent.

We are thankful that our institution recognizes the importance of wellness, and our trainees receive support in a number of ways from Harbor UCLA medical center and LA county.

Wellness team members for 2022-2023 are Dr. Leslie O’Campo (c/o 2025), Dr. Nicole Johnson (c/o 2024) and Dr. Sandeep Singh (c/o 2023).

What financial assistance comes from LA County?

  • Housing stipend: $6,000 per year (as of fall 2022)
  • Education stipend: $1,000 per year for books, conferences, electronics, etc.

What services are available for Harbor neurology trainees?

  • The Graduate Medical Education office has a full-time clinical psychologist who can meet individually with trainees as needed and who is also the director of GME wellbeing
  • Helping Healers Heal (H3) is a peer support system for all workforce members at Harbor UCLA Medical Center

What additional support does the neurology program provide for the residents?

  • Every year, our PGY4s receive funding to go to the American Academy of Neurology annual meeting for a week.
  • Our program provides reimbursement to residents presenting at conferences and this year, we plan to provide some funding to PGY2-3s attending conferences even if they are not presenting an abstract.
  • AAN membership
  • Year subscription to Board Vitals question bank
  • We are always trying out new things!

What have residents done for retreat/ wellness days?

This past year, the residents went to Temecula, CA (see above pictures). Previously excursions have been to Disneyland.
