Salary and Benefits

Resident Salary: Residents are appointed as Resident Physician at Harbor-UCLA and are entitled to privileges given to all LA County employees. Postgraduate physician’s salaries and benefits are established periodically by the County of Los Angeles Board of Supervisors, by way of County ordinance and or through an applicable Memorandum of Understanding with the Joint Council of Interns and Residents (JCIR). Salary is dependent on the postgraduate year of the resident. The Joint Council of Interns and Residents or JCIR is a statewide union organization for residents. • $10,000 annual housing allowance
• $1,400 annual education stipend
• $500 PGY 1 “welcome bonus” ($1,900 for annual education stipend in first year)
• $3,900 annual Chief Stipend
• $300,000 QI Research Fund
• 3 meals a day at home institution
• $27/day for meals on rotation
• $125,000 Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion fund

Educational allowance: A CIR provided professional educational bonus of $1,400 per year is available.

Housing allowance:  A $10,000 per year housing allowance has been recently negotiated to off set the cost of housing in Los Angeles.

Bilingual stipend: Bilingual residents may also receive an additional $1,200 per year as a bonus.

Vacation/Holidays/Sick Days: Each resident receives 20 working days of vacation and 4 wellness days. Sick days that are not taken may be partially converted into additional pay. A summary of benefits and details are available at:

Professional Liability Coverage/Malpractice: Provided at no cost.

Taxi Vouchers:If a resident is too tired to drive home, a taxi voucher will be provided.

Disability: Provided by JCIR

Health/Dental Insurance: Residents are entitled to enroll in one of several programs approved by the County. A stipend is provided to purchase various types of insurance (e.g., health, dental, disability, life, vision) and money that is not spent on that will be added to your salary.  Dependents are eligible for enrollment, however the resident will be responsible for any premiums related to dependent coverage if over the allotted stipend

Food: All meals are provided by Harbor UCLA Hospital Cafeteria while on duty. Additionally, when at the VA Hospital or at an away elective, residents are entitled to a $25/day stipend for food.

Uniforms: Provided by Laundry and Linen Services. Each resident receives 6 pairs of scrubs and 2 white coats.

Parking: Provided free of charge to all Resident Physicians.

Library Services: Residents are provided with excellent resources for researching at Parlow Library, which is adjacent to the hospital. Copying privileges are also provided at Parlow Library. To visit the library’s website, click here.

Resident Health/Counseling Services: Confidential counseling support services are available to all residents.
