Advanced Imaging Fellowship

The Advanced Imaging fellowship program is a 1-2 year fellowship at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center and the Lundquist Institute at Harbor-UCLA that is designed to develop broad-based expertise in cardiovascular CT, magnetic resonance imaging, biostatistics, and image processing. Upon completion of the program, Advanced imaging fellows will be able to image all forms of cardiovascular disease with cardiovascular CT and MR with level III expertise in each modality. Fellows can focus more on CT and/or MR based on personal preference/interest.

This fellowship is recognized by the Harbor-UCLA Graduate Medical Education Committee but is not officially recognized by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) as a program. However, this fellowship has been training residents/fellows/Cardiologists and Radiologists for many years, with dozens of candidates who have completed training since inception.

Program Details

The major purpose of this fellowship training is to prepare individuals for careers in academic cardiology. Therefore, emphasis is placed on the understanding not only of the technical aspects of imaging, but also on physiology and pathophysiology. Fellows will be trained in writing protocols, manuscripts, and grant proposals. It is anticipated that at the end of their training, these highly qualified and skilled individuals will be able to launch a productive research career and be able to teach this modality to other physicians.  The primary goal of this program is to allow physicians to become clinical experts in cardiac CT and MR scanning, growing modalities with widespread utilization in practice. Furthermore, opportunities to expand echocardiography and nuclear imaging as desired by the fellow. It is widely recognized among clinicians throughout the United States, and graduates act as directors of cardiovascular imaging throughout the United States at both academic and large clinical centers.

The primary faculty will be Matthew Budoff, MD, who has been doing cardiac CT scanning for over 25 years, Dr. Sion Roy, Director of the Inpatient Cardiac CT Program and Jina Chung, Director of Cardiovascular MR.  Dr. Budoff has written the Competency Guidelines for Cardiac CT for the American Heart Association/American College of Cardiology, as well as first authored all versions of the COCATS Training Requirements for Cardiovascular CT Training over the last 15 years.  He was the primary author on the Scientific Statement from the American Heart Association on Cardiac CT, and currently sits as a founding member of the ICACTL (accreditation board for CT labs) and CBCCT (certification board of CCT).   Other faculty involved in direct training and supervision include Dr. Priya Pillutla, Director of the Adult Congenital Heart Disease Clinic and Congenital Cardiac CT.

As the Advanced Imaging fellow, you will:

  • Work in the experimental and clinical imaging laboratory, including obtaining informed consent for IRB approved clinical studies and assisting in multiple ongoing clinical trials using cardiovascular computed tomography
  • Administer and interpret cardiac CT scans daily in the scanning suite, including performing intravenous access
  • Gain exposure to cardiac MR scans and work under Dr Jina Chung in performing and interpreting the studies.
  • Teach cardiac fellows and/or radiology residents on their cardiac CT rotation, as well as outside physicians or trainees during prescribed 1 week intensive courses which run every 6 weeks throughout the year.
  • Go through formal Level 2 and Level 3 training, and attend national conferences with focus on imaging
  • Attend weekly cath conference, cardiac imaging conference, and Cardiology grand rounds
  • Get trained on biostatistics and research best practices from Lundquist, as well as other topics
