Interventional Track – General Cardiology Fellowship

The Harbor-UCLA Cardiology Fellowship Program recently created the Interventional Track curriculum. This curriculum focuses on giving interested fellows an increased focus and opportunities for more exposure to interventional cardiology, including structural heart disease, peripheral intervention and advanced coronary interventions, at both Harbor-UCLA and PIH Good Samaritan Hospital. The Interventional Track is designed for cardiology fellows who want to pursue advanced interventional training after general fellowship.

A general cardiology fellow on the Interventional Track should expect 3 months of cath per year of fellowship for a total of 9 months of cath (compared to the 6-8 months for a non-Interventional Track fellow). These months will be split across Harbor-UCLA Medical Center and PIH Health Good Samaritan Hospital. The general cardiology fellowship curriculum will also be adjusted to accommodate for the extra months of cath, with less exposure to imaging and consults.

Fellows who are highly motivated to become interventional cardiologists will find this increased exposure to interventional/structural heart disease and increased procedures during general fellowship will enhance their experience and opportunities for interventional fellowships.

About Harbor-UCLA Medical Center

Harbor-UCLA is a large, public tertiary care center providing cardiovascular services to a large and diverse patient population. Harbor serves its own community of patients in the South Bay area in addition to critically ill patients as part of Los Angeles County’s STEMI and Cardiac Arrest system of care.

There are four full-time interventional faculty alongside full-time faculty in general and adult congenital cardiology, advanced imaging, and electrophysiology.  All faculty hold academic appointments in the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA.

The two modern cardiac catheterization laboratories at Harbor-UCLA provide 24/7 service and an opportunity to take substantial responsibility for interventional services with direct supervision of faculty.

About PIH Health Good Samaritan Hospital

PIH Health Good Samaritan Hospital is located adjacent to downtown Los Angeles and serves its local community and a very active referral practice for its advanced interventional therapies. The recently updated cath labs and hybrid procedure rooms allow the fellows to participate in all aspects of interventional patient care at Good Samaritan Hospital including a truly unique and intensive breadth of interventional procedures.
