Clinical Curriculum:

During the five-year integrated residency program, the trainee is exposed to general surgery in years one through three. During this time, they will be integrated with general surgery residents. Vascular residents will be assigned to rotations that contribute to vascular surgical practice including ICU, surgical oncology, transplant surgery, acute care surgery, trauma surgery and cardiac surgery. The vascular trainee is expected to develop skill in the assessment and management of the ill patient, to understand the nuance of pre-operative assessment and procedural planning, and to establish a strong foundation in basic open and endovascular procedures.

During the fourth and fifth year of training, the resident will rotate exclusively on the vascular surgery service with their time split evenly between the Harbor-UCLA Medical Center and the Long Beach Memorial Medical Center campuses. The final two years will focus on complex vascular surgical management with graduated autonomy such that the trainee is fully competent and prepared for independent practice upon completion of the program.
